 PASTOR’S CORNER

As you might expect, this pastor's corner will contain reflections on my trip to the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany.  Yes, I know, September is when we start up our regular youth programs and such and I usually talk about that, but the Passion Play only happens every 10 years!

The whole experience was wonderful.  I'm going to list many of my thoughts, but they are in no particular order.

First was the people.  We had a very congenial and convivial group of 23.  They were from Virginia and North Carolina.  We had our quiet ones and our funny ones.  We all seemed to get along together and did a great job of keeping an eye out to help where we could.  We also got back to the bus on time every time - a miracle in itself!

Second was the scenery.  Germany is beautifully green, with grand fields of all sorts of crops.  I particularly liked the fields of sunflowers.  Also in the farmland are those tall white windmills which are used to generate electricity.  Austria is always awesome, with the Alps and all those glorious flowers, especially those in window boxes in Bavaria (which is both Germany and Austria).  The Czech Republic is also beautifully green and has some wonderful vistas to enjoy.

Third was the towns themselves.  Berlin, Leipzig, Wittenburg, Dresden, Munich, Oberammergau, Innsbruck, Vienna, Salzburg, and Prague are fascinating places, each with its own charm.  We were able to explore many of these cities in detail because we were given quite a lot of free time.  For me, that meant shopping!  I love to check out different places, whether its shops, museums, or restaurants.  The food over there is just delightful!

Fourth was the museums.  There were many, many options, like the Pergamom Museum in Berlin which houses the magnificent Ishtar Gate from Babylon in Nebuchadnezzar's time.  The National Gallery in Dresden has many wonderful paintings including Raphael's Madonna, which is the painting that has two very famous angels in it.  The Luther Museum in Wittenburg does a great job of chronicling the life of Martin Luther and all the difficulties he lived with. The Museum in Oberammergau had some beautiful hand-carved nativities on display.

Fifth was the Cathedrals.  We visited many, all of which were magnificent.  I was glad to see that people still worship there and that they were not just "tourist attractions".  We were in the primary cathedral where Bach composed many of his works.  We visited other cathedrals which were architectural marvels, including one in Prague where King Wencleslaus is buried.  Then there were the smaller, local churches, like one in Oberammergau where we heard the Mass given in English and they ended the service with "Here I Am, Lord".

Sixth was the Passion Play itself.  I've seen it three times now (1980, 2000, and 2010) and am awed each time.  The townspeople go all out to present a wonderful re-enactment of the events of Holy Week.  I still am amazed how they are able to do it.  Not only is the Play itself a marvel, but the music is just beautiful! The play began as a vow in the town in 1633 as a prayer and a promise to God if He would spare them from the Black Plague.  There were no more deaths from plague in Oberammergau.  The first play was in 1634, and has continued every ten years with few interruptions since.  The 2010 production was the 41st Passion Play.

And there were so many more things - street musicians, performers on stilts, beautiful gardens, marvelous statues, cruises on the Danube and clocks in town squares which have been working for hundreds of years. It was also so much fun when we tried to communicate and neither of us knew the other person's language.

Each person in the group will bring back their own set of special memories.  Each one of us will never be the same. You might check with Barbara Smith and Lana Lefferts to see what their special memories are. For me, it was another trip of a lifetime, a time to see how God has touched lives for centuries, to see that God is still touching lives today.  God is touching your life today.  Please always remember that.

Peace,

Cynthia

SHERBOURNE COMMUNITY FEEDING

We will be meeting at Sherbourne on September 11th at 9:45 am to put together bags.  Please keep this in mind if you would like to help.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Even if you cannot knit or crochet, there are other opportunities to help with the prayer shawl ministry, like fleece lap blankets which are tied, no sewing.  Or perhaps you still want to learn to knit or crochet, there is that opportunity too.  Or just come and talk and laugh and pray and eat of course! We are progressing nicely but will need continued support.  So far the shawls are beautiful, the talent we have in our church!  We will be dedicating the ministry sometime in fall but not sure of the date yet.  Watch the weekly bulletin. We can then begin distributing the shawls.  If you have any questions please email Pam Soto at pumice@comcast.net or call Diane Springfield.  Thanks to all of you who have been so involved.  We usually meet on Tuesdays, our next meetings are September 14th and 28th from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Hope to see you there. Again any donations would be greatly appreciated, right now everyone is donating their yarn and products.  Perhaps some day someone you know will receive one and then you will know the significance of this wonderful ministry, so please any donation is appreciated to buy yarn, fleece, storage containers, cards to give with the shawl and the like.  Blessings, Pam

             Apple Butter Time!

Saturday, October 9th will be the day for the Fellowship Class Annual Apple Butter Stirring.  Plan to join us for a turn at stirring the copper kettles with the large wooden paddles - - all ages welcomed.  The cost will be $5.00 a pint, and it should be ready by 3 p.m.  If you have any empty pint jars sitting around - - even just 1 or 2 - - we would love to have them.  They can be placed in the kitchen or in the narthex for us to pick up.  If you want to see the applesauce process the night before, join us in the kitchen at 6 p.m. of Friday, October 8th.

NEW MEN’S BIBLE STUDY

Beginning on September 8th at 6:00 am Tim Ruxton will be leading a men’s bible study. The group will meet in a Sunday School room in the education wing.  Please come and enjoy this morning study and fellowship time.

MUSIC NOTES

Did you know that studies by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, at Brown University, conclude that music instruction can help build intellectual and emotional skills, facilitate children’s learning and strengthen other academic areas, such as reading and math?  Music can positively affect children and adults of all ages! So how can you or your child get involved?  Listed below are the groups that we have here at Trinity.  We are blessed with talented volunteers who are willing to help all ages learn about music and how we can use our music to the service of God.  Please join us this year!

TRINITY CHIMES

All children in 2nd-5th grade are invited to participate in our chime program.  Pat Shrader does a great job with teaching these children how to read music by ringing chimes.  We need at least 8 children to have a chime choir.  This is a cost free opportunity for your child to learn how to read music!  Please consider our chime program when scheduling your children’s activities.  We rehearse from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon beginning September 12th.  Come and bring a friend that might enjoy the fun and learning!

TINTINNABULATIONS

All Jr. and Sr. High Students who have rung bells or would like to try ringing bells are asked to meet at 6:00 p.m. in the sanctuary on September 12th!  It helps if you have rung chimes or have some musical experience, but if you have the interest, your directors will help you learn.  We just need the commitment on Sundays from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.  Those who attend will feast on my famous chocolate chip cookies after we ring!

TRINITY BELLES

We will begin rehearsals on Monday, September 13th, at 7:00 p.m.  I would like to create a calendar for this rehearsal, so please e-mail me your plans that would conflict with a rehearsal or church service. All bell ringers who are available to clean bells, please meet at the church on Monday, August 30th at 7:00 p.m.  Wear old clothes and bring cleaning rags.  See you then!

TRINITY CHANCEL CHOIR

All who enjoy singing are welcome to join this great group of people.  This includes high school and college students as well. We work hard at learning a variety of styles of music and will soon begin our Advent and Christmas music.  Please join this group of dedicated people who meet on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. Nursery provided if needed!  Our “Back to Choir Night” will be September 8th.  We will have a short rehearsal and then a time of fellowship and sharing.  Please bring a simple snack to share!

TRINITY MEN’S CHOIR + ONE (Ruth)

We will begin our rehearsals at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 22nd.  I am looking forward to hearing this group sing again.  See you September 22nd at 7:00 p.m.!

THE SPARROWS

The Sparrows, our contemporary music team meets for practice on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm.  They lead the music for the 8:30 am Sunday worship.  If you play an instrument, or just want to sing, please come and join us!

ODYSSEY

All Junior & Senior High students are invited to our first rehearsal on Sunday, September 12th at 4:00 p.m.  This first meeting is very important to help us determine our plans for this year.  Music is here for Youth Jam which will be held Friday, November 19 and Saturday, November 20th.  This is a wonderful experience singing with over 100 youth under the direction of Dan Stokes.  Please put these dates on your calendar now!  Although we lost a lot of seniors this year, let’s show them that while we miss them we can still carry on and be a vital group!  See you September 12th!

TREBLE CLEFS

This children’s choir will meet at 5:00 p.m. on Sundays, beginning September 12th.  We will begin working on our special songs, music reading, and our Christmas play.  All children in grades 1-5 are welcome to join this group.  No experience is necessary, so come and bring a friend to share in the fun and learning.  If Wednesday night suits your family better then come and join the Angel choir that meets at 6:00 p.m.

ANGEL CHOIR

This choir works with the Treble Clef Choir, but gives parents the option to attend on Wednesday nights at 6:00 p.m.  Dinner will be served at 6:00 followed by singing, music reading, and learning our play for Christmas.  Shirley McPherson will lead this group with a Bible lesson or story during dinner.  We will be “Agents in Action” for God studying stories of the Old Testament this fall.  Please join us on Wednesday, September 15th at 6:00 p.m.  During this first meeting parents are welcome to have dinner and fill out the necessary forms for their children.  Please join us for this first meeting!

CHERUBS

Ms. Lori and Ms. Pat will be so glad to see all of our Cherubs from last year and hope we have some new ones this year.  We invite all children around age 3- kindergarten to attend our first meeting on September 15th at 6:00 p.m.  We will sing, listen to Bible stories from the Old Testament, have a craft time, and eat dinner together.  Parents and grandparents are welcome.  A few extra hands are appreciated with this group.  Please join us and bring a friend from school or your neighborhood.  We all need to know that “Jesus Loves Me”!

NEW THIS YEAR!

I am so excited to announce that with the help of the UMW, the church will be providing dinner for the Cherubs and the Angels on Wednesday nights.  We are trying this through December.  Thank you ladies!

We offer a lot of musical programs here at Trinity.  If you already attend one of these groups, invite your neighbor or their child to come with you.  I hope to see old and new faces in September.  See you then!  Blessings, Pat

UMW NEWS

The UMW will meet on September 9th at 6:30 at church for a covered dish dinner with the UMM.  We will be making plans for the pumpkin patch and the bazaar, so plan to bring a dish, a friend and plenty of ideas!  See you there!

September kicks off the “busy season” for Trinity’s UMW.  We will be working the Pumpkin Patch along with the UMM through October 31st, and will be needing lots of volunteers from the church to help unload the pumpkins and man the tent during the month.  On September 9th, the UMW will host a joint covered-dish dinner with the UMM at 6:30 pm.  All men and women who attend Trinity are invited to join us for the evening.

The bazaar will be held October 22nd -23rd, and we need your “nearly new” items. Any pretty collectibles or items you no longer need that are clean and in good condition would be greatly appreciated as well as crafts.  We cannot accept anything electrical (nothing that plugs in) or any clothing.  If something is frayed or has seen its best days, please save it for the yard sale.

We are always glad to welcome new members and visitors, so if you want to be involved with a group of hardworking, mission-oriented, caring women, come give us a try.

     Authentic Outreach

     September 25th

The mini course of 6 hours is part of regular Lay Speakers training.  You are welcome to take any course without any obligation to go farther in the Lay Speaking Program.

Additional programs:

  1. Storytelling with Linda Goodman – What more needs to be said?
  2. Basic Lay Speaker – How the United Methodist Church works in ministry.  This is for Council Members and Committee Chairs or people that are just interested in the governance of the church
  3. ESL Program Overview – for people that want to know more about working with people that do not use English as their primary language
  4. Interpretive Bible Reading – being able to present the bible readings in church from the pulpit or in a Sunday school class with greater confidence in delivery and style

Most Christians avoid evangelism because they think it means confronting strangers, engaging in a Gospel monologue presentation and trying to "close" or gain an immediate conversion. Many Christians, having tried to evangelize unsuccessfully, have concluded that evangelism is not for them. It must be for someone else.

TEI has developed a unique perspective designed to reach those people in the "gap" who need Christ. God's truth does not change, but the world we are communicating to is changing.

TEI's evangelism training process teaches:

A step-by-step process that gives Christians a new perspective on evangelism as a process that is part of discipleship and the joy and adventure of being part of God's Plan

A "listening" and "asking" communication style vs. a "telling" and "confronting" style

Christians how to overcome their hesitations and share their faith with confidence and gentleness

Christians how to develop their communication

There is a sign-up sheet on the sign-up booth.  The cost is as follows:  Evangelism is $20 plus a $25 text.  Certified Lay Speaker is $25 plus a $25 text.  Authentic Outreach or Storytelling is $25 (no text).  Basic Lay Speaker is $25 plus $11 text.

PUMPKIN PATCH

I know you can feel it, even through all this heat we have endured.  That feeling in the air that fall is on its way.  And that can mean only one thing……PUMPKIN TIME!!!!!!!  Yes, that joyous time of year when we gather to pass the peace and the pumpkins.  Our delivery date this year is September 29th, 2010 at 5:30 pm.  Please come out and join us as we kick off our fall fund raising season with the unloading of the pumpkins.  If you have never participated in this event I encourage you to join us for all the fun.

The pumpkin patch is a great time to meet new people, reconnect with old friends and come together in fellowship. I would encourage everyone to prayerfully consider working the pumpkin patch this year.  If I could get everybody to commit to working just one shift we would be fully staffed this year.  This is a great time to raise money for our numerous mission projects and invite some new friends to join us on Sunday for worship.  Let’s make this the best pumpkin patch ever!  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me 768-4358 or toddmmiller@verizon.net.  Yours in Christ, Todd Miller

STEWARDSHIP NEWS

Some of you, particularly my wife, were concerned when I shared that I had not put money in the offering plate at Trinity for more than a year.  THANK YOU, you should be concerned!  As my Christian brothers and sisters, part of your responsibility as one of God’s stewards, is to be concerned about my behavior and my faith decisions.  Any time you feel I am not behaving like a Christian, please pray for me and talk with me.  Our family has tithed for nearly twenty years, and we consider that decision to have been a privilege, a responsibility, and a blessing.  We have recently been using a way to give that increases the funds available but does not provide for weekly contributions to the Sunday offering.  Before you relax because of this new information, let me explain the need for your continued prayers.  “On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made”

(1 Corinthians 16:2).  God makes it clear through Paul that our stewardship decisions and giving responsibilities should be weekly.  Have you evaluated your personal giving responsibilities and obedience recently?

Over the last four months in the newsletter, we have discussed stewardship from the perspectives of being a day-to-day activity and not just an annual fund raiser, of being a conscious and sacrificial responsibility, of being driven by a shared vision, and of our being accountable for our stewardship to the Highest Authority.  Our 2010 Stewardship Campaign will run from September 12 through October 3.  I pray that individually and collectively, the Trinity family will use this campaign to evaluate both our corporate and our personal commitments and abilities to manage the time, talent, truth, and treasure that God has entrusted to us.  As we go through the 2010 TUMC Stewardship Campaign, may we all focus on making the support of the Trinity ministries a joyful part of our weekly worship.
